THE WOOL THAT WINS

Each year the Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Award promotes excellence in wool production and finds some of the best fleeces in Australia and New Zealand
I
t’s round this time each year, that a group of Australian farmers gather together in a hall in Melbourne.

The men in this room are responsible for producing the finest merino wool in the world. In front of them, on a long table, is a neat pile of raw merino wool fleeces. Next to each one, a handwritten name card with the name of each supplier.

This is one of the most important dates in the Ermenegildo Zegna calendar.
This is the judging of the annual Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Awards.

On this day, the judges will choose what they deem the very best superfine merino fleece in Australia and New Zealand. The farmer that produced this fleece will win the coveted Wool Award

This event started in 1963, when in collaboration with Australian Superfine Wool Growers Association Ermenegildo Zegna launched its annual Zegna Wool Awards. Its mission was to support breeders in producing top quality fleeces and to help incentivise its suppliers to commit to the rearing conditions which ensure perfect quality wool.

At that time Ermenegildo Zegna was concerned that suppliers were turning away from rearing high quality breeds in favour of cheaper breeds with higher yields. But to us, quality matters more than quantity.

That’s why we launched the awards 54 years ago: to use our position within the wool ecosystem to help protect and preserve. And to help ensure the continuing evolution of these special sheep.

All fleeces entered in the competition are purchased by the Zegna Group. A further selection of the very best are transformed into the top-line fabrics of the Ermenegildo Zegna collections.

For all our expertise in weaving and finishing, without closely monitoring raw materials, the most sophisticated techniques are worth nothing. Provenance is all. That’s why Zegna is fanatical about sourcing the excellent raw material. And committed to ensuring the sustainability of its sources. And it’s why this Awards judging matters to us so much.

The 2017 edition of the Wool Awards takes place between 16th and 19th March. May the best one win.
